This framework is based on the work of researchers Johann Windt, Kerry MacDonald, David Taylor, Ben Sporer, David T. Martin, and Bruno D. Zumbo who have conducted a literature review titled: “To Tech or Not to Tech?” A Critical Decision-Making Framework for Implementing Technology in Sport (Full Text). Here are their key insights. 👇
For those who like a short text version of the authors' findings, here it is:
Did you know that there are 4 key pitfalls regarding the implementation of sports tech that can be avoided by closer internal & external collaboration to improve decision-making?
This has been studied by researchers from The University of British Columbia. They conducted a review study of the benefits and pitfalls of technology in sports science and medicinal applications. The result is a 4-step decision-making framework in which the following key questions need to be answered:
- Would the promised information be helpful?
- Can you trust the information you will be getting?
- Can you integrate, manage, and analyze the data effectively?
- Can you implement the technology in your practice?
On the positive side, they found that reliable technology and a correct implementation lead to high-value creation, such as getting a holistic perspective on the athlete. On the negative side, they found that technology and its data are not always transparent or trustworthy and don't always deliver a clear and actionable message.
So...
Sports organizations should use this framework and collaborate with stakeholders to answer these key questions. This will support the choice of the appropriate technology and smooth implementation.
