Summit 2018

On 25-26 October 2018, the Sports Tech Transfer and R&D Summit took place in Ghent. The conference featured 30 cutting-edge presentations, inspiring keynotes and interactive panel sessions with experts from leading organizations as research institutions, public authorities, venture capitalists, industry players, regulators, advisors and sport teams and federations. We welcomed attendees from more than 15 countries worldwide.

During the event, the SportUp acceleration program was launched as well. At that moment in time, there was no STRN yet. The event was there to bring people together, discuss on sports tech related topics and share thoughts on what the future could bring.

A variety of topics were on the agenda in 2018:

  • Understanding the political landscape for the sport sector and learning how it can facilitate technology transfer
  • Boosting innovation ideas supported by public private financial partnerships
  • Facilitating cooperation and transfer of knowledge between universities, business and sports organizations
  • Defining strategies for the development of evidence-based sports technologies
  • Stimulating cross-industry and cross-regional sport innovation
  • Improving networks among academic researchers, sport governing bodies, R&D managers, civil servants, and sports scientific staff members in teams

We remembered 3 key takeaways from the event:

  1. Innovation is all about collaboration. But that doesn’t mean you have to give everything away for free. You always need to have some protected IP in case you want to bring something to the market. (Prof. Wim Vanhaverbeke, Innovation Management & Strategy, Hasselt University)
  2. The sports sector is a very hybrid one. Sports tech is not like any other industry. If you’re too commercial, the soul doesn’t like it. And if you have too much soul, you won’t be doing enough commerce. (Prof Martin Carlsson-Wall, Stockholm School of Economics)
  3. You can’t pick a winner, the ecosystem produces winners. (Dr. Martin Schlegel)
